Abstract

Belarusian translations of secular literature of the 16th century are an excellent resource for studying living language. In a period when the Belarusian language of literature was influenced by the Church Slavonic, such works were characterized by numerous examples of the Belarusian vernacular on the level of vocabulary, morphology and phonetics. The phonetics of the monumental Story about a Tryst, which is analyzed in the article, confirms the trend of departing from the tradition and from the desire to make an orthographical standard based on native phenomena.
