Abstract
The present paper analyses the aesthetic categories of „beautiful” and „ugly” in selected images in the novel and their interactions. The aim is to clarify the way in which these categories are shown in the novel’s imagery: whether there are images that appear as carriers of only one category of the „beautiful-ugly” dichotomy and whether there are images which express both categories at the same time. To achieve this aim, the author explains the meaning of „beautiful” and „ugly”, outlines the definitions of these categories in this paper, analyses specific macro- and microimages found in the novel, and describes how they are embodied in the category „beautiful” and „ugly”.
