Abstract

Based on materials collected during field studies in the Braslavsky, Postavsky and Svislochsky regions, this article describes the stereotype of the Jews prevalent in the Polish-Belarusian-Lithuanian borderland. Special attention is paid to the external signs that distinguish Jews from other groups: language, temperament, lifestyle and occupation, customs, religious traditions and ceremonies, and also to the attitude of other nationalities towards the Jews. An important category in interaction between the representatives of different cultures is the „our-foreign-another” opposition. Basing on this category, an attempt is made to determine the place of the Jews in relation to people of other nationalities living in this area.
