Abstract

In modern Belarusian we observe the use of two alphabets, the Latin and the Cyrillic. Historically, approximately in the 16th century, the Latin alphabet began to be used for writing texts in the territory of Belarus. This use persisted in Belarusian until the mid 19th century, when the Latin alphabet was gradually supplanted by the Cyrillic. At present, we observe a revival of the Belarusian Latin alphabet. In 2009, the official version of the Latin alphabet proposed by the Belarus Academy of Sciences and approved by the UN was adopted. Today, the use of the Latin alphabet in the modern Belarusian language is expanding. This process is due to the fact that Belarusian is a European language, with many lexical items of Latin origin. This brings it closer to other European languages, especially Polish. The use of the Latin alphabet makes the Belarusian language more accessible in terms of reading and writing and highlights its European roots. Thus, the increased use of the Latin alphabet in the modern Belarusian language is more comfortable and rational.
